The team at Game Science, the folks behind Black Myth: Wukong, have once again pointed the finger at the Xbox Series S’s optimization challenges as the reason for the game’s unexpected PlayStation 5 exclusivity. Despite what some major media outlets are spinning, claiming Sony inked a “secret” deal to keep the game off other platforms, there’s little substance to those rumors. It seems Microsoft’s vague comments earlier on didn’t help clear the air, but, really, that theory has never held water.
Feng Ji, the director of Black Myth: Wukong, recently shared some thoughts on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, with insights picked up by the gaming community through ResetEra. Discussing the game’s accolade as Game of the Year 2024 at the Steam Awards, Feng Ji expressed mixed feelings, particularly about the absence of an Xbox version.
“The situation doesn’t feel entirely right, but that 10GB shared memory requires several years of optimization expertise,” Feng Ji explained, highlighting the challenges posed by the Xbox Series S’s memory limitations.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has been quick to shoot down any notions of trouble in paradise. They told Forbes they have no awareness of any technical hurdles the game might be facing on the Series S. “While we’d rather not get into the specifics of deals our partners have with other platforms, we can confidently say the Xbox isn’t causing the delay,” the company clarified.
So, with all this laid out, it’s safe to say we can finally put those exclusivity rumors to bed.
