Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios announced that Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is set to launch on June 13th for PS5 and PC. Interestingly, while the game was initially showcased with PSVR 2 compatibility, all mentions of this VR support have since been mysteriously removed from their communications, sparking some curiosity among fans.
The game made its first appearance at PAX West 2024, where it was available as a playable demo for PSVR 2. It promised to be an experience tailored for both VR and traditional screen gameplay, raising expectations for VR enthusiasts.
Steel Wool Studios, backed by a significant $5 million investment from HTC back in 2016, has been a key player in the VR market since its establishment in 2012. They have a reputation for crafting VR-centric games such as Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue in 2023 and the FNAF: Help Wanted series, with its sequel having launched in 2024.
With the latest installment of the FNAF series about to drop, the sudden absence of PSVR 2 support in its marketing materials has caught the attention of many. Even the PlayStation Store page, which initially hinted at optional PSVR 2 functionality, no longer reflects this feature, as confirmed by web archives. The only acknowledgment from PlayStation regarding PSVR 2 came in a brief post coinciding with the release date announcement on February 12th, a post that was swiftly taken down.
As of now, Steel Wool Studios remains tight-lipped about the status of PSVR 2 support and whether it might still be part of a future update or launch strategy. Additionally, there’s uncertainty over whether the incoming PC versions on the Epic Games Store and Steam will offer any VR options.
We’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarity but are still awaiting a response. Once additional information surfaces, especially concerning the VR launch or any shifts in their strategy, we’ll keep the community updated.
