The top firearms in Black Ops 6 for Season 1 are a diverse bunch. With the introduction of two powerful new weapons, the Saug SMG and the Krig C assault rifle, this season’s arsenal has something robust for every playstyle.
In our extensive play sessions, every firearm was put through rigorous testing to identify the strongest choices for multiplayer loadouts. From assault rifles and SMGs to sniper rifles and shotguns, we’ve highlighted at least one premier gun in each category. If you’re a seasoned Call of Duty player, some of these weapons might feel reassuringly familiar because they echo past favorites, albeit under different monikers.
Here’s our rundown of the current top ten guns trending in the Black Ops 6 meta for Season 1.
Black Ops 6: Leading Guns in the Season 1 Meta
The current champions on Black Ops 6’s battlefield are:
- Jackal PDW (SMG)
- AEK-973 (marksman rifle)
- XM4 (assault rifle)
- Krig C (assault rifle)
- Tanto .22 (SMG)
- AS VAL (assault rifle)
- LW3A1 Frostline (sniper rifle)
- XMG (LMG)
- Saug (SMG)
- Marine SP (shotgun)
The release of Season 1 ushered in balance changes that reshuffled our best guns lineup a bit from when Black Ops 6 debuted. The Jackal PDW still reigns supreme, with the AEK-973 rising to the second spot, pushing the AMES 85 off the list. Meanwhile, the XM4 remains a solid third choice.
A fresh face, the Krig C, swiftly climbed to fourth, contending closely with the XM4 as the top assault rifle choice. The Tanto .22 continues to impress as a formidable SMG from a distance, and the silenced AS VAL is becoming increasingly popular.
The LW3A1 Frostline’s inclusion might be debated since some prefer the LR 7.62, but our tests showed the LW3A1’s increased damage makes it superior. The XMG stands alone as the best LMG—none of the others quite measure up—while the Saug joins as the latest Season 1 addition. Finally, the Marine SP can deliver a one-hit-kill when you get up close.
Dive deeper into each choice below:
Jackal PDW
Despite a slight nerf since its beta dominance, the Jackal PDW remains the top SMG and overall best gun in the game.
Our recommended Jackal PDW loadout for this swift SMG can dismantle foes at close range. Leverage the suggested attachments, and you won’t need to aim down sights. Bear in mind, though, it unlocks at level 43, so you’ll need time before gearing it up fully.
Generally, a laser—either the Steady Aim or Fast Motion—and a CQB Grip with No Stock make the Jackal PDW a powerhouse up close. For the remaining slots, consider Fast Mags, a Ranger Foregrip, a Short Barrel if available, or a Suppressor.
2. AEK-973 (Marksman Rifle)
Unlocking at level 34, the AEK-973 can eliminate foes with a single burst if luck is on your side, or reliably within two bursts.
To make the most of it, mastering recoil control is crucial. The AEK-973 suits a tactical playstyle, pacing around the map with purpose. Attachments like the Ported Compensator and Reinforced Barrel aid in long-range encounters. Complement these with a Vertical Foregrip for recoil control and a Commando Grip for added agility in aiming.
Since the iron sights leave much to be desired, a quality optical sight is a must. The Accu-Spot Ultra Holo, offering a 3x zoom, is a personal favorite due to its clear view.
3. XM4
The XM4 serves as the quintessential all-rounder. We delve into its best configurations elsewhere, but this rifle excels in versatility. Whether you’re navigating tight corridors or firefights rooted in cover, the XM4 stands ready. With access at just level four, it’s a trusty early pick.
While not a specialist in any one aspect, you can optimize it through attachments that enhance damage, range, and recoil control. A foregrip and a Long or Reinforced Barrel, once unlocked, are invaluable additions.
4. Krig C
Between the Krig C and the XM4, the choice boils down to personal preference. Both are versatile, but the Krig C’s novelty in the latest season makes it worth trying. Optimizing your Krig C loadout means focusing on accuracy and recoil management, with attachments like the Ported Compensator and Vertical Foregrip. Add a Long Barrel for extra range, and you’ve got a precision tool that dominates at a distance. Unlock it after reaching page six of the Season 1 battle pass.
5. Tanto .22
An anomaly among SMGs, the Tanto .22’s slow fire rate is offset by its significant damage output. It shines at mid-range battles, despite being outperformed in close quarters by faster SMGs. Earn it at level 16.
Focusing on recoil and mobility for the Tanto .22, consider the Ported Compensator, Ranger Foregrip, Commando Grip, and Balanced Stock for your build. Pair with a simple optic, like a red dot or holographic, to round off this formidable setup.
6. AS VAL
The AS VAL’s integrated suppressor makes it perfect for stealthy players or modes like Search & Destroy. Its damage output is impressive, although it’s unlocked rather late at level 55.
This is best deployed methodically, sticking to cover and ambushing at mid-range. Attachments like the Reinforced Barrel and Recoil Springs complement its playstyle. Consider an Extended Mag to offset the initial 20-round magazine. More insights on building this gun can be found in our AS VAL loadout guide.
7. LW3A1 Frostline
The LW3A1 Frostline, boasting impressive mobility and handling, leads the sniper game in Season 1. Whether you favor precision from afar or quickscoping in frenzied matches, it’s suitable for Black Ops 6’s fast-paced environment. Unlock it quickly at level four.
Equip for agility with a short-range scope, such as Dobrych 4x, and a Muzzle Brake for precision. Complement mobility with the Short Barrel, Commando Riser, and Light Stock attachments.
8. XMG
Dominating the LMG category, the XMG isn’t built for speed but thrives when providing cover fire. With top-tier firepower and magazine size, it rewards patient, strategic players. Level 13 unlocks it.
Though an optic isn’t recommended, employ attachments like the Reinforced Barrel for improved range and the Ranger Foregrip for handling. Enhance mobility slightly with the Commando Grip, Balanced Stock, and Recoil Springs.
9. Saug
Season 1’s Saug offers a mini-Uzi experience. It excels up close though struggles at longer distances due to heavy recoil. Unlock it on the battle pass’s third page.
To counter its limited range, dual wielding with the Akimbo Saug attachment is advisable. Opt for Overkill to include a versatile primary weapon. Paired with lasers and recoil-specific attachments, mobility and proximity are your best allies.
10. Marine SP
The Marine SP shotgun dominates smaller maps, delivering lethal damage with each shot. On tight maps like those in Face Off Moshpit, its effectiveness is unmatched. Reaching level four lets you equip it early.
Ideal accessories include the Combat or Quick Load Barrel and Steady Aim Laser. For general play, pair it with a longer-range primary gun using Overkill.
Honorable mentions also go to the AMES 85 and AK-74, along with our best C9 loadout for fans of the MP5-inspired SMG. Check out our guides for insights on maps, Double XP events, and campaign puzzles.
