If you thought Stardew Valley had reached the peak of its popularity, think again. This much-loved indie farming simulator has hit an impressive milestone in sales, making waves in the gaming community.
Even if you’ve never plowed a virtual field or harvested pixelated crops, you’ve probably heard of Stardew Valley. It’s one of those games that everyone talks about. You might assume it’s successful because of the genre’s general appeal rather than having superstar status. But when you look at the numbers, they tell an incredible story. Recently, Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the creator of the game, updated its official website with the latest sales data. As of December 2024, Stardew Valley has sold over 41 million copies worldwide. On PC alone, 26 million copies were snapped up, and the Nintendo Switch version boasts 7.9 million sales.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate what those figures mean. In the rankings of all-time best-selling video games, Stardew Valley now holds the 15th position, trailing just a few million copies behind Wii Fit. It even surpasses major hits like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not bad for a game that started as a humble indie project, right? To add to its impressive track record, nearly 11 million of those copies were sold in less than a year, considering that in February of the previous year, Barone announced sales had surpassed 30 million.
In 2024, players were treated to the latest update, version 1.6, even though Barone had already announced his new project, Haunted Chocolatier, three years prior. But fear not, dear fans—the anticipated sequel is still in development. Barone reassures us that a lot of progress has been made, and, given the runaway success of Stardew Valley, there’s no need for him to rush. Rest assured, good things are worth the wait.
