Sony has recently rebranded its upcoming standalone XR headset for enterprise users, now introducing it as ‘XYN’. The focus of this device is aimed squarely at spatial content creators.
First shown to the public during last year’s CES, the XYN, pronounced ‘zin’, comes equipped with some very impressive specifications. Each eye benefits from a 13.6MP (3,552 × 3840) resolution, thanks to Sony’s in-house developed ECX344A OLED microdisplays.
These displays are capable of delivering 90 frames per second at 1000 nits (though only at a 20% duty cycle), and they offer 96% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. When it comes to resolution and color accuracy, this positions XYN ahead of alternatives like the Apple Vision Pro.
Having had the chance to try out a prototype back in July, we experienced what was then known as the Sony SRH-S1 “content creation system.” On the positive side, the headset boasted ergonomic comfort, a convenient flip-up design, and excellent display clarity. Conversely, the stylus-ring controller combo left much to be desired due to poor tracking, and the demo content wasn’t fully optimized for the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset inside.
Details beyond these initial impressions remain sparse. Neither the pricing nor the release date for the XYN has been disclosed, which leaves us eagerly awaiting further announcements.
What we do know is Sony is planning to release its XYN Motion Studio PC software in March 2025. This software will allow seamless integration with 12 ‘mocopi’ sensors, providing an improved motion capture workflow for users.
Moreover, Sony is preparing to introduce its XYN Spatial capture solution. This innovative feature will transform images taken with a mirrorless camera into high-quality, photorealistic 3D assets through Sony’s proprietary algorithms.
Interestingly, the headset promises compatibility with an extensive range of third-party tools, according to their press release. However, users should not expect XYN to be a low-cost competitor to headsets like the Quest, as its target audience is distinctly professional. Evidence of this positioning was seen at the CES 2025 show, where Sony displayed the XYN in two color options: a sleek black for prosumers and a more business-oriented grey for enterprise clients.
