Over the past year, news about Sony’s SRH-S1 standalone MR headset had been sparse since its initial reveal at CES 2024. But now, Sony has announced both the official launch date and price for this enterprise-focused device.
The SRH-S1, created in partnership with Siemens, is slated for a February 2025 release, carrying a price tag of $4,750. From January 23, 2025, interested buyers can place orders directly through Siemens. Initially pitched to appeal to creatives, it’s now clear that Sony and Siemens are zeroing in on industrial applications. They claim the SRH-S1 will “enable the industrial metaverse” and bring new dimensions to product design and manufacturing using Siemens’ advanced mixed reality tools.
Under the hood, the SRH-S1 boasts a 13.6MP resolution per eye, thanks to Sony’s ECX344A OLED microdisplay paired with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. This setup is further enhanced by Sony’s own “proprietary rendering technology” for rendering 3D objects in real time.
In its role as a mixed reality device, the SRH-S1 offers passthrough video capabilities, a handy flip-up visor, and unique ergonomic controllers designed for seamless 3D interaction. These come in two forms: a stylus-type pointer and a ring.
Over the course of the year, Siemens has been busy refining its suite of Immersive Engineering tools tailored for enterprise use. These tools empower SRH-S1 users to engage with 3D assets in CAD, interact with models, and carry out collaborative multi-user design reviews remotely via Siemens’ cloud-based NX X platform.
Bob Haubrock, Senior VP of Product Engineering Software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, shared insights: “Following the CES preview last year, our teams have developed revolutionary tools that transform mixed reality’s role in engineering. These tools support global collaboration with high-fidelity 3D models and enable secure, direct co-creation on crucial 3D CAD data.”
Additionally, CES brought news of Sony’s plans for a creative-focused headset targeting prosumers, called XYN. Although details on pricing and release are under wraps, it’s rumored to resemble a prototype variant of the SRH-S1. The XYN, distinctively black compared to the SRH-S1’s grey, hints at an exciting expansion in Sony’s MR offerings.
