Recent data has unveiled some intriguing sales statistics for both PlayStation and Xbox Series consoles. This information, reported by the Wall Street Journal, spans from the era of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox right up to the current generation.
Looking back, the PlayStation 2 was a monumental success, selling 155 million units, whereas the original Xbox managed to sell only 24.7 million. When we move to the next generation, the competition was more balanced. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units, and the Xbox 360 was close behind with 84 million units, showing only a minor difference.
Fast forward to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the sales gap widened again. The PS4 sold a hefty 117 million, while the Xbox One reached 57.9 million units. As for the most recent models, up until the data was collected in June 2024, the PlayStation 5 has achieved 61.7 million sales, whereas the Xbox Series X|S stands at 28.3 million. That’s roughly half the sales of the PS5.
This data has sparked a lively debate among fans. Some express disappointment over Xbox’s hardware sales, noting that the brand as a publisher fares well, with many pointing to hardware issues as the primary concern. On the flip side, a few critics believe the Xbox is worth the investment mainly because of its third-party acquisitions.
In other news, PlayStation recently rolled out a fresh update for the PS5 that introduces a variety of new features. Among these are Party Share, a Welcome Hub, adaptive charging for controllers, and personalized 3D audio settings.
The Welcome Hub stands out by allowing players to customize their home screen with various backgrounds and widgets. There’s even the option of preset layouts for added personalization. Also worth mentioning is the adaptive charging feature, which optimizes the power supply to controllers when they’re plugged into the console’s USB port, reducing energy consumption and extending battery life.
In related developments, fans of the game “My Time at Portia” will be excited to hear about an upcoming sequel announced for PCs, Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and some yet-to-be-revealed Nintendo platforms. Stay tuned for more details!
