The game development team behind Gorilla Tag, Another Axiom, is rolling out a significant update to their space station-based game, Orion Drift, following its early access debut last month. This update introduces a new mini-game, ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB), designed to shake things up.
CTB has players moving a beacon shaped like a rod back to their team’s base. It’s similar to capture the flag, but with an interesting twist: Orion Drift doesn’t impose any limits on player numbers or game duration. This means the door remains open for everyone to join the action whenever they want.
While the team keeps additional details under wraps, they promise there’s plenty more to look forward to in this update. We’ll get the full scoop when it lands on March 28th at 10 AM PT.
Available freely for early access since late February on Quest, Orion Drift uses the same arm-pumping movement mechanics as Gorilla Tag, letting players navigate around the space station. Besides the new CTB, the game offers various activities. Its main attraction, ‘Drift Ball,’ draws inspiration from the now-retired Echo VR and feels like playing handball in low gravity.
The game also boasts several mini-games in different station districts: parkour challenges for climbing enthusiasts, practice areas to perfect Drift Ball techniques, golf, basketball, and lounges for watching live matches all come together to offer a well-rounded experience.
Currently, Orion Drift supports up to 75 players in each server. However, Another Axiom aims to eventually expand this capacity to accommodate 200 players. Adding more activities is a key part to realizing this vision, though the game is still in its early stages.
Orion Drift mirrors the social appeal of Gorilla Tag with its inviting drop-in gameplay, but it hasn’t quite hit the viral notes of its predecessor yet. With around 3,300 reviews at the time of writing, it hasn’t cracked the top 50 bestselling games on Quest, where titles like Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag dominate the charts.
