It seems we’ve reached the end of an era where many have managed to enjoy Nintendo Switch Online without spending actual money.
A significant change is on the horizon for Switch users with the impending conclusion of a popular feature, notably in the aftermath of the Xenoblade Chronicles X re-release. Unfortunately, we’re also receiving confirmation that yet another feature won’t make the leap to the Switch 2.
Nintendo has announced, with a bit of disappointment, that the My Nintendo Gold Points program will come to a halt on March 25, just after midnight ET. This program was favored because it allowed players to earn 1% back in eShop credit for physical first-party games within their initial year of release. Digital purchases were even more rewarding, offering a 5% return. However, if you happen to buy a physical game from March 25, 2024, through the end of that year, such as titles ranging from Endless Ocean: Luminous to Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, you could still earn points. Sadly, Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond won’t make the cut for these rewards.
In a related update, the support page for Switch Online Vouchers notes that this feature won’t be compatible with Switch 2 titles. Previously, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers could buy these voucher pairs for $99 USD or an equivalent amount and redeem them for first-party games. Luckily, this option will still be available for upcoming releases on the original Switch, so you’ll be able to use them for games like Legends Z-A and Prime 4.
