Back in September, during their Connect event, Meta shared exciting news: they’re teaming up with Microsoft to let Windows 11 PCs connect wirelessly with the Quest. Fast forward a few months, and now both companies have confirmed that a preview of this feature is set to arrive by December.
What this means is that Quest 3 and the upcoming Quest 3S will soon be able to link up with Windows 11 PCs. This will enable a multi-monitor workspace experience that might sound familiar if you’ve used Apple’s Vision Pro. Since its launch in February 2024, Vision Pro has seamlessly connected to Mac systems using the Mac Virtual Display feature.
Microsoft is gearing up to release this feature in public preview this December. Their goal is clear: to attract users eager to boost their productivity with such advanced capabilities.
Melissa Grant, the Senior Director of Product Marketing for Microsoft 365, shared her enthusiasm in a recent blog post. She stated, “Windows in mixed reality will soon bring the full spectrum of Windows 11 onto mixed reality headsets. With Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, you can effortlessly access your local Windows PC or even a Windows 365 Cloud PC. This connection creates a high-quality workstation with multiple monitors, all within seconds.”
The showcase at the Connect event highlighted a novel way to connect to PCs. By simply locking eyes with your keyboard, you can instantly access your computer and manipulate windows across several virtual displays. This represents a significant enhancement over the current Remote Desktop feature provided by Meta’s Air Link.
Quest has made its mark as a leading standalone VR gaming console. Yet, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, views this recent Windows integration as a crucial advancement for the Quest platform. “This new feature is a leap towards developing a versatile computing platform,” he expressed. “While Quest excels in gaming, it’s designed for more than that. It’ll handle apps, video viewing, and various tasks you’d expect from a standard computer. Quest is truly an all-in-one device.”
We’re on the lookout for any official release updates, and rest assured, we’ll provide more details as they unfold.
