At last month’s Game Developers Conference, Meta shared an update on the performance of the Quest store, revealing that the earnings from Quest content have topped $2 billion. This number may ring a bell because Meta had already reported surpassing the $2 billion mark over a year ago.
When Quest launched in 2019, developer revenue steadily rose throughout the Quest 2 period. However, the past two years have seen a notable slowdown in revenue growth from the store.
There have been instances when Meta spotlighted new revenue achievements for the Quest store, such as the $2 billion milestone mentioned in September 2023. Now, more than 18 months later, Meta is still using the same figure in their updates. This suggests the $3 billion threshold hasn’t been reached yet, otherwise, they likely would have celebrated that milestone instead. It seems reasonable to estimate total revenues from the Quest platform to be approximately $2.9 billion as of now, March 2025.
Updating the revenue milestone chart for the Quest store reveals a marked plateau in growth, contrasting with the significant revenue rise during the Quest 2 years. This stagnation is even more evident following the introduction of Quest 3 and its successor, Quest 3S.
Meta shared a few other metrics during the Quest platform update, though these lacked detailed explanation. For instance, they’ve said, “payments have grown by about 12% in 2024,” and consumers have “increased their monthly VR usage by 30% compared to the previous year.”
Despite repeated requests for further clarification on the unchanged $2 billion figure from Road to VR, Meta remains unresponsive.
Reflecting on the data presented, it’s crucial to consider the context. The Quest 2 debuted in October 2020 amid global COVID lockdowns, offering people new entertainment and connection avenues at a tempting $300 price—$100 less than its predecessor. Meanwhile, Quest 3 arrived in October 2023 with a $500 price tag, aimed at the premium market and touting advanced ‘mixed reality’ features that fell short of expectations upon release.
Acknowledging that the pricier Quest 3 did not match the popularity of the more budget-friendly Quest 2, Meta released the more affordable Quest 3S in October 2024 at the familiar $300 price point. The company also slashed the price of the 512GB Quest 3 model from $650 to $500.
As it stands, it’s only been about six months since both the launch of Quest 3S and the price reduction of Quest 3, making it too soon to determine whether these adjustments will revitalize spending on the Quest platform. However, new tariffs introduced by the Trump administration could disrupt Meta’s pricing strategy moving forward.
In addition to hardware costs and value considerations, Meta has noted a shift in user demographics and spending patterns, reshaping the Quest store landscape. Young and new users are increasingly gravitating towards free-to-play content instead of premium offerings, a trend that could further influence future earnings and strategy.
