Imagine the excitement of unwrapping a brand-new tech device on Christmas morning, only to have that joy dashed by the need to download updates or find the charging cable. But what’s even worse? How about an update that completely bricks your device before you even get to use it? Unfortunately, that was the reality for some users recently, but Meta is stepping up by offering replacements and Horizon Store credits.
There was quite a stir on Reddit on December 25th when a flood of new Quest owners reported a significant issue. After installing the latest update, their brand-new devices were met with a chilling message: “Your device is corrupt. It can’t be trusted.” With no way to reset the headset, these devices were essentially rendered useless.
The problem seemed to be linked to Quest’s recent v72 update, which was supposed to enhance user experience, but instead caused quite a headache for both new and older headsets that hadn’t been updated in a while.
To address the issue, Meta posted a statement on a help thread: “We’ve come across a software update problem that left some Quest 2/3/3S headsets unresponsive and unable to boot up correctly. We’re working hard to fix it for everyone, but most users should now find their device functioning normally.”
Actually, only a subset of headsets experienced this malfunction, and after pausing the firmware update, new owners who haven’t set up their devices yet are likely in the clear. Meanwhile, for those affected, Meta is providing replacement headsets and gifting some Horizon Store credit to help soothe the frustration.
Meta offered further reassurance in a ‘Next Steps’ thread for Quest 3S users: “We recognize that a small number of Quest 3S devices are encountering a software update issue causing boot problems. If your device is impacted, we’ll send a replacement at no additional cost. Plus, you’ll receive Horizon Store credit as a gesture of our dedication to supporting you.”
Despite Meta’s quick response, some damage was already done, leaving some users like Reddit’s ‘Physical-Slip5049’ with bleak tales of holiday disappointment. They recounted, “I purchased a gently used Quest 2 from eBay as a Christmas gift for my 9-year-old. On Christmas morning, we booted it up, only to be forced into an update. After following Meta’s reset instructions, it was hard-bricked. My son waited three months, only to have his Christmas hopes shattered. He spent half of the day crying.”
On top of this, Meta is providing refurbished units and store credit for those whose Quest 2 headsets are out of warranty, aiming to amend the situation for everyone affected.
As we continue to monitor this situation, we want to hear from you. Have you been affected by this update issue? Share your experience in the comments, and let us know how Meta has responded.
