A new plugin called Junk Store has made its debut on the Steam Store, allowing users to run third-party game stores like Epic Games and GOG straight from Steam Deck’s Gaming Mode. This initiative, highlighted by GamingOnLinux, offers something akin to Decky Loader, another open-source plugin launcher for the Steam Deck. But there’s a twist with Junk Store—SDK Innovation, the minds behind it, aim to have it recognized as an official Steam Deck app, eliminating the need for users to tweak any settings themselves.
The Steam listing highlights, “Junk Store is now on Steam. This standalone version has been completely reworked to ditch any reliance on Decky Loader. Now, you can install your favorite games from the Epic Games Store and GOG Store directly in game mode.”
Over on r/JunkStore, a post from the developers mentions the Steam Store page went live to gauge interest by tracking its ‘Add to Wishlist’ clicks. Still, there’s no certainty that Junk Store will officially join the Steam library since “Valve will still have to review the software before final release.” However, the developers see Valve’s approval of their page as a “quiet nod of approval.”
There’s a catch though—the Junk Store won’t be free or open-source on Steam. Starting from scratch was necessary to make sure the app runs smoothly with SteamOS, especially since it won’t rely on some features Decky Loader provides. There’s no word on how much the app will cost; the developers are still figuring out development expenses and community interest. Plus, a release date remains undecided, as the developers are only a duo managing this ambitious project.
Despite these hurdles, the developers are aware of their unique position as the pioneering Steam Deck plugin to navigate its way to the app store. They’re hopeful this sets a positive direction and think it will benefit gamers, developers, and the Steam community as a whole.
If you enjoy tinkering with your Steam Deck, the Steam version of Junk Store might not be necessary—you can run it via Decky Loader for free. But for those who prefer a straightforward gaming experience without any fuss, Junk Store may become a great solution to easily access games bought on other platforms.
