Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games have recently made a big announcement: they’re bringing some of their top-hit games to Google’s new Android XR system. This operating system is set to make its debut on Samsung’s ambitious ‘Project Moohan’ headset, expected to hit the market sometime in 2025. Unlike its predecessor, Daydream, this version of Android is fully optimised for XR headsets, allowing users to enjoy an extensive library of both traditional Android apps and immersive XR experiences.
Both Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games are old hands in the XR industry. They’ve made a name for themselves by consistently supporting all major VR platforms, so it’s not too surprising to see them jumping in early on this new venture. In fact, their partnership with Google seems to showcase their knack for seizing opportunities as first movers in the market.
In their separate announcements, Owlchemy Labs shared that their beloved VR games, Job Simulator from 2016 and its delightful sequel, Vacation Simulator from 2019, will soon be available on Android XR. Meanwhile, Resolution Games is bringing its 2021 hit, Demeo, into the fold as well.
Samsung is boasting quite the lineup for Project Moohan, including standout hand and eye-tracking features, reminiscent of the Apple Vision Pro. However, it also caters to a more gaming-focused audience with motion controllers and PC VR streaming, offering a unique blend of features.
For companies like Owlchemy Labs and Resolution Games, already well-versed in hand and eye-tracking features, adapting their games for Android XR seems rather straightforward. A big part of this ease is thanks to Unity’s immediate support for Android XR through the integration of the OpenXR software framework.
Owlchemy Labs explained in a press release that developing for Android XR gave them a more direct approach to creating XR content suitable for a wide variety of devices. They highlighted how the platform’s integration within Unity’s environment eliminated the hassle of third-party tools, making the transition to XR seamless.
Echoing Owlchemy Labs’ sentiments, Resolution Games’ CTO Johan Gästrin pointed out how Google’s direction aligns well with their studio’s focus on social gaming experiences. He hinted that Google’s involvement marks a significant step forward in the XR industry.
The release of these three games, featuring Job Simulator’s chaotic fun and Demeo’s engaging multiplayer board game adventures, presents a welcoming gateway for new users. However, it remains to be seen if other XR developers will rush to adopt Android XR. Much of this depends on Project Moohan’s impact, particularly since key details like the headset’s price, specifics, and exact release date are still under wraps.
