So, Bungie just gave us a peek at Marathon, and it feels like everyone was waiting for this moment, like, forever, right? It’s the first fresh game they’ve cooked up since Destiny 2 hit shelves way back in 2017. And yeah, they didn’t just drop it all at once—oh no, they went all cryptic with an ARG before the big reveal. Little snippets of tunes and cool character doodles led to a freaky morning where some player-guided robot went on a little tour around the Bungie office. I swear, it’s like they wanted to build some serious suspense.
But, you know, let’s not wander off. They finally let the cat out of the bag with some gameplay visuals. We’re talking squads of three Runners duking it out with high-tech gadgets and a voiceover that’s got you thinking doom is just around the corner. I mean, when death’s part of the sales pitch, you know it’s gonna be intense.
Set on Tau Ceti IV—yep, that’s the backdrop—they’re hunting treasures and AIs like it’s an existential scavenger hunt. There are six Runner types, each with their own quirks, like some superhero line-up. Four of them already teased out: Locus, Blackbird, Glitch, and Void. Still waiting on the last two—guess they’ve gotta keep some cards close.
It’s all about the grab-and-dash here. You snatch whatever relics you can find and bolt before someone offs you. Sounds simple? Haha, not with PvPvE in the mix. Besides other Runner squads, you’ve got UESC forces throwing a wrench in your plans. Someone’s always got to complicate things.
Oh, and in case you’re feeling nostalgic, this isn’t just a whole new do-over, but also a tip of the hat to the old Marathon trilogy. Got its curtain call during 2023’s PlayStation Games Showcase. That art style though, Joe Cross has it all over—guy’s a genius from what he pulled off with Dune and Destiny 2, right?
Now, about Bungie’s gig with Sony. Got bought up last year but still hitting all platforms. Keeping things separate yet snuggled with PlayStation Studios. They’ve been through tough tides with layoffs, so Marathon is kind of make-or-break for them.
Mark your calendars because Sept. 23, 2025—that’s when Marathon is set to hit Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and PlayStation 5, with all those stars aligning. Shorter wait? Try for the alpha test in April if you’re chillin’ in North America.
And then Bungie tapped Alberto Miego—the guy’s done some mind-bending shorts for Love, Death, and Robots on Netflix—to wrap up the show’s end with one killer trailer. Gritty, just how I like it. It goes down the rabbit hole of Runner life and how death just melts into the background after a while. Creepy but sort of poetic, if you think about it.
