Blade & Sorcery, the VR combat simulator that’s won over gamers everywhere, hit a major milestone with its 1.0 release in June 2024, wrapping up its development phase. But the team behind it, Warpfrog, is not slowing down. They’re already hard at work on their next project, promising it’ll match the modding capabilities that made Blade & Sorcery such a hit.
While details are scarce, Warpfrog gave some insights to Road to VR about their upcoming game. Like its predecessor, the new project will be in the VR realm and carry familiar features – think physics-based gameplay and a strong focus on simulation, key elements that have come to define Warpfrog games.
Modding enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that this new game will continue the tradition of being “highly moddable,” similar to what we saw with Blade & Sorcery. That game set a high bar, allowing players to easily tweak it using Nexus Mod Manager or manual methods. Mods could be as simple as adding extra visual effects when weapons clash or as complex as introducing completely new maps and weaponry, truly transforming the gaming experience.
Back in October, Warpfrog discussed their upcoming project with Meta, highlighting a shift in their development strategy. They’re reinventing their framework, moving away from the “spaghetti code” that stretched during Blade & Sorcery’s early access phase. This new framework is being built from the ground up for a new engine, designed to be faster and more efficient.
“We’re basically starting fresh, crafting a framework tailored to our team’s needs,” Warpfrog explained. “For the first time, we’re working from beginning to end on a game with a full-scale team.”
Expectations are high for Warpfrog’s next venture, and it’s no wonder. What started as a project by a single developer, known as KospY, has grown into a robust team of nearly 30. This growth reflects the ambition and capability of the studio.
The significant 1.0 update in June brought a ‘Crystal Hunt’ story mode to Blade & Sorcery, transforming the game from just a sandbox brawler to an adventure game filled with narrative depth, progression systems, and a larger, more connected world.
As Warpfrog looks ahead, they shared their excitement about their next steps in a Steam update: “This is where the fun begins. Over these past five years, we’ve learned so much, and it’s thrilling to think about what we’re crafting next. Your support has empowered us to aim for bigger, more ambitious projects.”
Warpfrog’s journey promises more exciting developments on the horizon, and their continued push for innovation and quality in VR gaming keeps us eagerly awaiting what’s next.
