Arrowhead Game Studios’ creative director, Johan Pilestedt, recently shed some light on the upcoming Helldivers movie and the level of involvement the developers will have in its production. According to Pilestedt, the film’s creation isn’t something the studio is spearheading.
When questioned on X about whether the studio would play a role in the film’s production, Pilestedt provided a candid response. “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see,” he shared, adding, “We are not Hollywood people, and we don’t know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don’t, and shouldn’t, have final say.” This statement makes it clear that while they might have some input, they aren’t taking the reins.
Announced last week by Sony at CES, the movie is still in the early planning stages, and it appears that none of Arrowhead’s team will be spearheading the project. As it stands now, this adaptation doesn’t seem to mirror the process behind shows like The Last of Us, where the original developers had a significant creative role.
As the film progresses without any names attached to it yet, fans are left wondering how it will capture the unique excitement of battling hordes of space bugs and robots as part of a comically intense empire of space marines. The game draws heavily from the 1997 classic Starship Troopers—a movie owned by Sony that remains a cult favorite. This raises questions about how the Helldivers movie will align with this inspiration.
The film will see PlayStation Productions collaborating with Sony Pictures, with many details still undecided. Since its launch in 2019, PlayStation Productions has been busy transforming some of Sony’s beloved game franchises into movies and TV shows. They’ve tackled projects like Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, and The Last of Us. The Helldivers adaptation is another ambitious project on their list, which includes upcoming films inspired by Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and Gravity Rush. As of now, release dates for most of these adaptations are yet to be announced.
