Animal Company, the free-to-play sensation available on Quest, has been making quite the impact on the platform. It has consistently ranked among the highest earners for several weeks now, closely trailing the well-loved Gorilla Tag. Fans of Animal Company, which draws inspiration from the survival game Lethal Company, show no signs of losing interest anytime soon.
Only one other game, Another Axiom’s Gorilla Tag, had previously managed to exceed 100,000 user reviews on Quest, achieving this milestone in March. Gorilla Tag stands as the top performer on the platform in terms of both reviews and revenue. Now, Wooster Games’ Animal Company has joined this exclusive club, having surged past 100,000 user reviews. This leap comes after an impressive doubling of reviews following the announcement that the game had surpassed one million monthly active users just last month.
Looking back to last month, Animal Company had garnered just over 60,000 reviews on the Horizon Store, while Gorilla Tag boasted figures above 140,000. Within just a month, Animal Company rocketed to over 108,000 reviews, whereas Gorilla Tag saw an increase of only about 6,000 reviews during the same period.
Data from VRDB, an independent aggregator, points to a remarkable uptick in reviews beginning in mid-March. If this trend continues, Animal Company might just overtake Gorilla Tag in the realm of user feedback on Quest, though several other factors will need to be considered.
Daily active users and monthly active users are vital statistics as well, underscoring Gorilla Tag’s consistent popularity. However, Animal Company is rapidly gaining ground. The ongoing surge in users for Animal Company should ideally equate to higher revenue for Wooster Games, although the actual financial impact remains undisclosed since the introduction of microtransactions in September.
Wooster Games did share with Road to VR last month that the in-app purchases launched have placed the company in a robust and positive state. They noted, “Since launching monetization in September, our revenue has seen consistent monthly growth, more than doubling since December. The most impressive figure, however, is our player base—Animal Company now boasts over one million monthly active users, a fourfold increase since December.”
This all happens as the Quest platform is experiencing a demographic shift, thanks in part to the release of the Quest 3S, Meta’s $300 mixed reality headset. Meta has confirmed earlier this year that free-to-play content and a younger audience are driving a surge in revenue from in-app purchases, as seen in games like Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The pressing question now is whether Animal Company’s growth will lead to sustained user engagement and revenue growth in the long term. We’re eager for Wooster Games to reveal their revenue figures, giving us a clearer view of how top-earning titles on Quest are performing. If it mirrors Gorilla Tag’s reported figures from last June, Animal Company’s earnings might already be in the millions.
