You can dive into this game on platforms like PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. Right now, the main objective is to take on Godzilla and, well, try to live through it!
My feelings about Fortnite have become pretty conflicted over time. I think about the early, thrilling days of its launch, back when each match was a chaotic fusion of both skilled and novice players battling it out without any AI bots. The unpredictability and hilarity were some of the things that made it great. Fast forward to now, and it feels like that energy has faded. The matches are padded with bots that pretend to fight but practically throw themselves at you. Also, the game has lost its mysterious storyline vibe, which used to leave a lot open for interpretation. Instead, it’s full of quests straight out of an MMORPG and characters that chat away, spelling out predictable video game narratives. On top of that, each week sees the arrival of new characters from various popular intellectual properties, eroding what was once Fortnite’s unique identity, transforming it into something reminiscent of the corporate clutter found in Ready Player One.
Despite my gripes, Fortnite hasn’t lost its grip on me entirely. There’s something about the way you interact with the game world that still clicks—the joy I get from dashing, sliding, vaulting, and just freely maneuvering through its landscape is undeniable. On particularly tough days, I find myself logging in just to complete a few daily quests for quick XP. It’s a soothing activity that lets me get lost for a while. Also, Fortnite is the master of spectacle, pulling off grand events on a scale few games can really match. Right now, we’re in one of those moments. Godzilla, the mighty king of the monsters, might show up in matches unexpectedly. I caught a video glimpse of what playing as Godzilla looks like—it’s stunning, with the scale and his terrifying strength perfectly captured. I’ve got a feeling that this weekend will have me playing Fortnite more than I usually would, just for the thrill of running for my life from something that genuinely feels threatening. So, if you’re battling it out in Fortnite this weekend and happen to transform into Godzilla, look out for a tiny figure sprinting around the map, and try not to squash me. I’m harmless! — Carolyn Petit
