MSI has just unveiled a new "X3D Gaming Mode" for its motherboards, promising enhanced performance for games utilizing AMD’s Ryzen 3D V-Cache CPUs, whether you’re using a single or dual CCD setup.
MSI Enhances AMD Ryzen 3D V-Cache CPUs with "X3D Gaming Mode" BIOS, Debuts on 800-Series Motherboards
Motherboard giants like Gigabyte (AORUS) and ASUS have recently updated their AGESA 1.2.0.2a BIOS firmware to better support AMD’s flagship gaming processor, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. This chip has quickly become a gamer’s dream, dominating the market so much that it’s already hard to find in stores due to overwhelming demand. Manufacturers haven’t stopped at just supporting this powerhouse; they’re also focused on pushing the boundaries of performance for both current and future Ryzen 3D V-Cache processors.
MSI is jumping into the mix as the newest company to provide this enhanced capability with its "X3D Gaming Mode" BIOS feature. Designed similarly to solutions from other manufacturers, this mode offers options for either turning off one of the CCDs or disabling SMT, which can significantly enhance gaming performance. It’s particularly aimed at dual CCD models like the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and the soon-to-arrive Ryzen 9 9950X3D, although even single CCD configurations are expected to see improvements.
When we tested a preliminary version of this BIOS with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, we witnessed as much as a 20% increase in performance while playing Far Cry 6 using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 at 1080p on Ultra Settings. The average frames per second jumped from 219 to 263. However, the performance uplift varies depending on the game—a 10% enhancement was observed with Shadow of The Tomb Raider.
At present, MSI’s "X3D Gaming Mode" BIOS is available on three top-tier motherboards: the MEG X870E GODLIKE, MPG X870E Carbon Wi-Fi, and the MAG X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi, all part of their latest X870 and X870E series. A more comprehensive release for these models, along with several others, is expected next week.
Even though AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D and its 3D V-Cache siblings are exceptional for gaming, any performance boost is always welcome. It’s encouraging to see motherboard manufacturers continually innovating to enhance the gaming prowess of Ryzen X3D CPUs.
