Release Window for Borderlands 4 Now More Defined

Recent updates from Take-Two Interactive’s CEO provide a clearer picture of when we can expect Borderlands 4 to hit the shelves. The buzz is that it’s aiming for a launch between Summer 2025 and early 2026. Announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2024, this next installment promises to whisk players away to a brand-new planet for another thrilling looter shooter experience.

Since the franchise first captivated audiences in 2009, it’s been riding high with a series of mainline releases and spin-offs, alongside comics, novels, and a card game. The not-so-successful live-action film aside, the Borderlands games have carved out a beloved spot in gaming culture, with Borderlands 3 alone selling a whopping 18 million copies and pushing the franchise’s total revenue over $1 billion. Fans, understandably, are on the edge of their seats for the next chapter, and it seems their wait might be shorter than they’d anticipated.

In a chat with Variety, Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick threw some light on the tentative timing for Borderlands 4’s release. As the gaming community eagerly awaits Grand Theft Auto 6, set for Fall 2025, Take-Two is mindful of not crowding the market with simultaneous blockbusters. Zelnick mentioned, “I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily.” With a desire to maintain at least a three-month gap between the two, Borderlands 4 could potentially see a late spring or early summer 2025 launch, depending on how development progresses.

Although the official announcement pegged its release window between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, there’s a possibility of it landing in early 2026. This timing allows fans to dive deep into GTA 6 before embarking on new adventures with the Vault Hunters. While the finer details of Borderlands 4 remain under wraps, it’s known that four fresh Vault Hunters will be introduced. The Art Director, Adam May, hinted that the sequel will dazzle with vibrant colors and cutting-edge tech, suggesting a revitalized look for this first-person shooter favorite.
