At the recent Meta Connect 2024 event on Wednesday, Meta unveiled an exciting new VR app called Hyperscape. This innovative app brings real-world locations to life in stunning detail, allowing users to explore these spaces through a Quest headset.
Currently in its beta phase in the U.S., Hyperscape opens up the intriguing possibility of using your phone to scan a room, which can then be transformed into a virtual setting. Moreover, you can virtually step into spaces that others have scanned and shared.
To give an impressive showcase, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented a “hyperscape” of none other than Green Day’s recording studio onstage.
“We’re venturing into bringing photorealistic environments to the metaverse, and we’re calling it Hyperscape,” Zuckerberg stated, with evident enthusiasm. “It’s quite amazing, and we plan to keep expanding it with even more content over time.”
Further details were shared in a Meta blog post, which explained:
“By leveraging Gaussian Splatting, a method for rendering 3D volumes, we’re able to make use of cloud rendering and streaming technology to display these environments on the standalone Quest 3 headset,” the post outlined. “In the future, creators will have the opportunity to construct their own virtual worlds within our VR platform, Horizon.”
For those excited to dive into this new VR experience, Hyperscape is fully compatible with the Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets.
