The highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has hit the ground running, marking a significant milestone as the first in the series to be available on Game Pass from day one. This move comes on the heels of Microsoft’s monumental $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
There was plenty of buzz around Microsoft’s bold decision, with some industry experts cautioning about a possible slump in sales, particularly for Xbox. However, Microsoft’s latest financial report paints a different picture. They expressed enthusiasm over Black Ops 6’s impressive performance, noting a remarkable 60% increase in sales for PlayStation and PC compared to the previous year’s launch of Modern Warfare 3.
But the true test was the impact on Game Pass. Microsoft has been grappling with stagnant growth in its subscription service, and bringing Black Ops 6 on board from day one was seen as pivotal. Although Microsoft hasn’t disclosed exact figures, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed a new record for Game Pass sign-ups on the game’s launch day.
Speaking to the BBC, Miles Leslie, Treyarch’s associate creative director and a 16-year veteran of the Call of Duty series, reflected on how the Game Pass launch has encouraged hesitant players to dive back into the action. He remarked, “It’s given those who were unsure or haven’t played in a while a chance to come back and give it a try.”
This has certainly been a strategic move for Microsoft, which is keen to broaden the Call of Duty audience. Some analysts believe Microsoft is wagering that by accepting a dip in initial Xbox sales for Black Ops 6, they can ultimately cultivate a larger player base, poised for long-term engagement through battle passes and cosmetic purchases.
Leslie also elaborated on the challenges facing the franchise: “We’ve reached a point where Black Ops and Call of Duty are longstanding legacies. I’ve been with it for 16 years, and the real challenge is evolving the series to bring along devoted fans while also creating a welcoming space for newcomers.”
The challenge now lies in keeping those Game Pass subscribers engaged and willing to maintain their subscriptions. Black Ops 6 Season 1 is set to kick off on November 14, and fans are already abuzz with anticipation. And by next year, gamers are expected to be treated to another premium Call of Duty release, possibly a sequel to Black Ops 2, if rumors hold true.
