A fresh report suggests Amazon is officially moving ahead with a TV adaptation of the popular sci-fi series, Mass Effect, from Bioware. This comes after earlier whispers that Amazon had its sights set on turning the acclaimed video game franchise into a television series. It appears the retail titan is now taking concrete steps towards making it happen.
Variety broke the news, revealing that although the Mass Effect series is yet to be publicly announced, it promises some notable talent. Daniel Casey, known for his work on the screenplay for “F9: The Fast Saga”, will be penning and executive producing the show under the banner of Amazon MGM Studios. However, Variety didn’t spill the beans on the plot or any potential cast members. Besides his “F9” credentials, Casey also contributed to the sci-fi flick “Kin” and handled rewrites on “10 Cloverfield Lane.”
Back in 2021, there were already rumblings about Amazon eyeing a TV adaptation of the much-loved sci-fi RPG series after plans for a different, unrelated Mass Effect movie fell through.
Interestingly, the update dropped on November 7, celebrated as N7 Day by Mass Effect aficionados, a day typically ripe with fresh revelations about the series. This year, though, Bioware had forewarned that N7 Day would be relatively muted in light of their recent focus on “Dragon Age: Veilguard.” At the moment, Bioware is busy crafting the next primary installment of the Mass Effect saga, though details remain under wraps.
Amazon tasted success earlier this year with its adaptation of the Fallout series, which has already been greenlit for a second season. It’s not surprising, then, that Amazon is keen to dive into another video game adaptation, this time drawing from the deep well of another beloved RPG series. The trend of video games crossing over into Hollywood has been catching on, with hits like Netflix’s Tomb Raider animated series and HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us series. Whether Mass Effect will capture the hearts of viewers like Fallout did remains to be seen, but we’re eager to find out.
