Man, you ever get that feeling like the future’s kinda creeping up on you, like it’s got some big surprise behind its back? Yoko Taro, the mastermind behind games like Nier Automata, totally feels that way. He’s got all these thoughts about AI taking over game development, saying we might end up just like bards in 50 years. Yeah, bards — who even thinks about them anymore?
So there was this chat with a bunch of cool game creators — Kotaro Uchikoshi from the Zero Escape series, Jiro Ishii of 428: Shibuya Scramble fame, and Kazutaka Kodaka, the brains behind Dangenrompa. They were all hanging out in a Famitsu interview, just casually discussing where adventure games are headed. Then, bam! The topic of AI sneaks in. It’s like, you’re talking about one thing and then — “Hey, how about that technology taking over our jobs?” Totally not awkward, right?
Uchikoshi starts off, kinda worried, saying, “So, there’s lots I still want to make, but AI’s getting really good, really fast. What if AI-generated adventure games take over?” And Yoko Taro jumps in, agreeing, ’cause why not double down on the existential dread? “Yeah, I can see us game creators losing our gigs to AI. I mean, in half a century, who knows, we might be the new bards.”
Later, Yoko’s like, “Imagine a world where you don’t even mimic your favorite creator’s style anymore. You just, like, have it generated. AI deciding what players want, throwing out these perfect storylines, and it’s all tailor-made. It’s kinda trippy, honestly.”
These guys, they’re all about those deep stories. You can practically smell the anxiety, right? But hey, silver lining — we’ve still got time! AI isn’t exactly writing the next blockbuster game script just yet. In big-budget, AAA games, especially narrative ones, we’ve still got human touch. But anyway, till AI stages a full-blown coup in game development, the adventure stories these guys are known for should be safe. Fingers crossed for now.
Got thoughts on all this? Hit us up. Personally, I’m just gonna chill and see how long it takes before AI’s everywhere.
