The narrative unfolding within the French Apex Legends cast reveals a strong stance taken by its voice actors, who have collectively declined to endorse a contract that would utilize their voices for AI training.
This intriguing development came to light through Pascale Chemin, known for bringing Wraith to life in the French version of the popular battle royale game. Chemin took to Twitter, suggesting that their publisher—almost certainly pointing to Electronic Arts—had inserted a clause in their agreements concerning the use of voice data for AI model training. While specific names aren’t mentioned, all indications hint towards Apex Legends and EA.
Additionally, it’s not just Chemin standing firm. A total of 31 other voice actors, involved in the same project, have reportedly joined forces to pen a letter of refusal addressed to the publisher.
“If we don’t unite right now to ensure a clause that safeguards our voices is officially embedded in our contracts—extending beyond us, to every video game dubbing studio—we risk never acquiring such protection and steering straight towards catastrophe,” Chemin expressed, thanks to a translation shared by ResetEra.
She continued, noting the harsh realities faced by many. “Naturally, declining work these days seems unreasonable. Work opportunities are scarce for several of us and financial strain is mounting. Sure, an income is needed. But we’re not just being asked to work; we’re being asked to relinquish our hard-earned expertise for the very AI that could replace us tomorrow. It’s an unprecedented demand—to support the advent of AI, contrary to our own interests.”
