Recently, I had an insightful conversation with one of the lead developers behind the latest World of Warcraft update, as we dove into the thrilling new chapter that introduces Undermine—an innovative city unlike anything we’ve seen in Azeroth before. Picture a bustling, lively metropolis where speed is the name of the game and you’ll find yourself driving and drifting through the streets in brand-new hot rods!
Entering the realm of Undermine is like blending the energy of New York with a chaotic steampunk twist, where safety takes a backseat. The latest WoW zone launched this week, and it was an absolute blast collaborating with my immensely talented teammates to bring this unique goblin city to life, along with its adrenaline-pumping vehicles.
The newly rolled-out D.R.I.V.E. feature, which stands for Dynamic and Revolutionary Improvement to Vehicular Experiences, offers an exciting twist to the World of Warcraft universe. It allows players to zip across the landscape in a G-99 Breakneck, WoW’s version of a souped-up hot rod. This dynamic vehicle is unlocked early in your adventures, right after you tackle “Eyes from Above” and dive into “No More Walkin’ Here,” which introduces you to the Breakneck through a thrilling tutorial.
Our design philosophy draws heavily from the whimsical and slightly chaotic aesthetics of World of Warcraft goblins. The G-99 Breakneck stands out with its audacious features, like blazing flames shooting from its scoop—perfect for navigating the animated streets of Undermine.
One standout feature we’ve proudly integrated is drifting, reminiscent of classic racing games. Incorporating this mechanic into WoW was a challenge, but it fired up our team with excitement. Drifting in this world encapsulates the exhilarating feeling of freedom and discovery you get when you first hit the road in your own car.
But it’s not just about speed; the car also allows room for a friend, inviting them to join you as you navigate Undermine’s bustling streets. Engage in competitive races, pushing both your skills and your vehicle to the limit on standard and mirrored tracks. For players who might prefer a slower pace or get a little dizzy from all that speed, there are options to adjust the engine for a tamer ride, or to revert back to traditional mounts—catering to each player’s unique preferences.
A car is only as exciting as the roads it travels, and Undermine does not disappoint. With cars darting all around, it’s a dynamic backdrop inviting you to become part of the vibrant chaos. Tasks such as delivering hot towels or dealing with a spectral tiger ensure that your presence in the city truly makes a difference.
Undermine is teeming with life and eccentricities. As you race through its streets, you might encounter a variety of colorful personalities—from pirates and mobsters to famous chefs and, believe it or not, folks bent on breaking your ankles! The city itself is a bustling hub of goblin culture, bustling beneath an artificial sky as a dense, energetic metropolis where everyday life hums with activity.
Among Undermine’s many attractions is Slam Central Station—a whimsical hub that connects you to places limited only by your imagination. This city shines with its goblin-spirited names like the Incontinental Hotel and the Gallagio, embodying a society obsessed with innovation and enterprise.
Undermine’s narrative revolves around self-improvement themes, woven into the broader “The War Within” storyline. You’ll be introduced to the Ringing Deeps, encountering familiar faces like Renzik and Gazlowe as they navigate the complex dynamics of this unique city. Gazlowe’s story arc, in particular, shifts from dissatisfaction to a profound change of heart, igniting a revolution where players have a hand in freeing the city’s streets.
Immerse yourself in Undermine—a city bursting with fast cars and intriguing tales. Whether you drift by a foot or an entire block, remember: drifting is drifting!
