Onward, the tactical military simulation shooter developed by Downpour Interactive—now under Meta’s wing—is gearing up for a significant 2.0 update. It’s a highly anticipated refresh since the game hasn’t seen a major overhaul for almost a year.
While Onward hasn’t been on the receiving end of frequent updates since the substantial ‘Mercenary’ update, which dropped in February 2024, fans can rest assured the game is still kicking. That update introduced players to a new PVE mode and brought various graphical enhancements into the mix.
Downpour Interactive is now ready to roll out its 2.0 update for Onward. Meta revealed in a recent blog post that this upcoming update will be its “biggest ever” and will be chock-full of new content.
Players can look forward to what Meta describes as a “massive graphical overhaul,” which includes improvements in weapon and utility visuals. Additionally, a new Operator system is on the way, featuring 20 fresh characters, along with new map content. More specific details about the 2.0 update are said to be coming our way “very soon.”
This update comes during a tumultuous period for the gaming industry, including significant layoffs at Downpour Interactive back in 2023. This shake-up saw the departure of the studio’s founder and CEO, Dante Buckley, who established the company in 2015, just a month before the layoffs took place.
Onward first made its debut on Steam in Early Access in 2016 and later made its way onto the original Oculus Quest in 2020. The game is known for its intense focus on realism in squad-based gameplay and its precise representation of real-world firearms.
For those interested in diving into Onward, the game is available for purchase on the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and newer devices, and also on Steam for PC VR headsets. It’s regularly priced at $25, making it accessible for VR enthusiasts looking to experience its tactical depth.
