Phasmophobia, the immensely popular cooperative ghost hunting game, has been a massive hit on Twitch since it burst onto the scene in 2020. The developers, Kinetic Games, have proudly announced that the game has surpassed 22 million copies sold. Looking ahead to 2025, they have an ambitious development schedule planned, which includes sprucing up the rather plain player character models. Here’s a closer look at the exciting updates and enhancements pegged for release later this year, as outlined in Monday’s news announcement.
The first significant update heading our way for Phasmophobia this year is known as the Chronicle update. Kinetic detailed this in a previous developer blog, highlighting a revamp in how players collect evidence. Players will now archive spooky clues like spectral temperature changes and mysterious sounds for the first time. To accommodate this, the Photos tab will transform into a Media tab. This could come in handy when a particularly fierce haunting unleashes chaos, and someone among your team is frantically screaming or, perhaps hilariously, arguing audibly.
Developers have also promised a more intricate approach to gathering data. Capturing a piece of media for the first time will be tagged as Unique, offering generous rewards when a contract wraps up. Repeated captures, on the other hand, will yield lesser rewards, incentivizing players to diversify their tool usage and build an array of different evidence pieces.
Following the Chronicle update, fans can look forward to the Player Character Overhaul. At the moment, players have a limited selection of avatars, each lacking distinct personality. However, the roadmap hints at new customization options, possibly letting players change their outfits between ghost-hunting gigs. This would be a refreshing shift from the current monotony of plain button-down shirts and other simple attire.
Later this year, Kinetic also plans to introduce a brand new map. They’ve hinted it will be relatively small, much like the house maps players are already familiar with. Additionally, existing maps are in for an upgrade. The Bleasdale and Grafton Farmhouses are set to receive major overhauls, with new layouts and rooms perfect for haunting. Excitingly, there are also whispers of holiday-themed updates for Easter and Halloween to look forward to, along with some intriguing 2026 developments, such as something called “Horror 2.0,” which has certainly captured my curiosity.
