A fresh teaser for the live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon has dropped, and let’s just say the dragons are looking a bit too lifelike for comfort.
Universal Pictures gave us the first glimpse at their live-action take on How To Train Your Dragon last year, leaving many—including me—wondering why we needed this adaptation. Fast forward to this weekend, and they’ve released a second teaser. Honestly, I’m still pondering the same question. Not that the teaser reveals a ton more than its predecessor, but we do see an influx of dragons this time. And that’s got me wondering yet another thing: what’s going on with Toothless? Our beloved dragon seems to have maintained his animated charm, though with a touch more realistic texture. But the rest of these dragons? They appear startlingly tangible.
Now, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but dragons aren’t real. So while they can only look so realistic, there’s a definite blend of slightly cartoonish elements among their designs. However, many of these creatures could easily pass for something out of a more serious dragon-centric flick. Meanwhile, Toothless comes off as somewhat sillier than usual, which feels a tad peculiar. Especially when you consider the animated original showcased a variety of dragon designs that were at times even more whimsical than Toothless himself.
That said, what’s done is done. The bright side? Dean DeBlois, the mastermind behind the original animated version, is back at the helm for this project, and Gerard Butler returns to his role as Stoick the Vast. So, at least we can expect some semblance of continuity, even if the dragons look a little odd. We’ll all have to be patient, though, as the film isn’t slated for release until June 13 later this year.
