At present, Matt Reeves has carved out his own niche with Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman, creating a standalone universe that’s not yet connected to the larger DC Universe (DCU). But when it comes to discussing if his version of the Dark Knight might someday join the DCU lineup, Reeves is playing it coy, keeping his lips tightly sealed.
“The Batman” was a massive hit, raking in over $770 million globally. However, the DCU has since undergone a transformation with James Gunn steering the ship. Right now, the only official entry into this rebooted universe is “Creature Commandos,” with Gunn’s take on Superman slated to premiere this summer and set the stage for more to come. Projects such as “The Brave and the Bold,” a film focusing on Batman and Robin directed by “The Flash”‘s Andy Muschietti, are on the horizon. Still, the role of Batman in that film is yet to be cast, raising questions about whether Reeves and Pattinson’s Batman might step into this broader universe. Gunn, during a chat on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast last month, mentioned he’s given it some thought, albeit without any concrete plans.
It’s crucial to note that Gunn’s musings aren’t set in stone, as he said he considers “everything.” This brings us back to what Reeves thinks about the possibility, particularly since he’s previously mentioned that his vision for Gotham won’t dive into fully fantastical realms — which sounds like a far cry from a universe that includes characters like Krypto the Superdog. However, Reeves opened up a bit more on the matter when he spoke with Josh Horowitz from “Happy Sad Confused” during the Golden Globes. When questioned about whether Pattinson’s Batman could find its way into the DCU, Reeves answered that it all hinges on whether it would make sense to do so.
“The story I wanted to tell focused on an epic crime saga. It’s been essential for me to fully explore that narrative, and thankfully, James and Peter [Safran] have been supportive of that vision, giving us the green light to proceed. Beyond that, the future remains uncertain, and I’m deeply invested in getting ‘The Batman Part 2’ moving forward, which is my current priority,” Reeves shared.
When pressed about what might happen if Gunn and Safran decided they wanted Pattinson to be the DCU’s Batman, Reeves responded, “I don’t know. We’ll have to see how things unfold.” Personally, I hope they leave things as they are. I’m a fan of Pattinson’s take on Batman. While I think he might pair well with David Corenswet’s Superman, I’m growing tired of sprawling cinematic universes. They really should consider giving Robbie P a sidekick Robin, though.
