Meta has subtly expanded Horizon Worlds by introducing its innovative digital currency—Meta Credits—across the US, UK, and Canada. This latest addition enhances the social VR platform, positioning it alongside giants like Roblox, which has Robux, and Rec Room, with its Tokens. With Meta Credits, users can purchase digital items crafted by creators, such as unique avatar gear and exclusive access to premium virtual spaces. Unlike Quest Cash, these credits are specifically for use within Horizon Worlds and don’t extend to purchasing hardware or accessories.
Although this marks a significant milestone, it’s not the inaugural phase of the Horizon Worlds economy. Since 2022, Meta has been tinkering with monetization strategies, letting users pay for digital goods using their local currencies. What sets Meta Credits apart is the characteristic vagueness about the real-world money being spent—an approach common to premium tokens.
As illustrated in the image above, you can buy bundles of Meta Credits, which sometimes include bonus amounts, or opt for their most straightforward package: 300 Meta Credits for $3, devoid of any bonuses.
Just like the initial launch of Horizon Worlds, Meta is cautiously controlling the rollout of Meta Credits. At present, they’re only available to users in the US, UK, and Canada. Other supported regions, such as Australia, New Zealand, much of Europe, and several East Asian countries, are still on the waiting list.
Meta also imposes parental controls for younger users. For those aged 10-12 (age limits vary by region), parents or guardians must approve any purchase that requires a credit card, including acquiring Meta Credits, under a parent-managed Meta account.
Notably, Meta Credits are non-transferable between accounts. This restriction ensures they remain tied to individual accounts and are solely usable within Horizon Worlds, whether accessed via Quest or the standard mobile app.
This move towards Meta Credits signals Horizon Worlds’ intent to cultivate a sustainable virtual economy. However, only time will reveal if it can lure creators and users from more established ecosystems like Roblox, Rec Room, and VRChat.
Considering Meta’s expansive reach, it wouldn’t be surprising if Meta Credit gift cards started appearing at checkout lines as we approach the Holiday Season.
